THE troubled Zimbabwe Volleyball Association, whose financial statements have perennially hovered in the red, seeks $47 000 for this year’s international assignments.

Zimbabwe will participate in the All-Africa Games and Beach Volleyball Olympic qualifiers which are expected to be played between April and May.

The Government will take over if the team qualifies for the All-Africa Games while the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee will do the same if the team qualifies for the Olympics.

However, ZVA will need to find the participation funds first.

Volleyball association treasurer Mxolisi Ndlovu said: “We have to find means to participate.

“For us to participate in the two international competition qualifiers coming up, we need US$47 000.

“If the teams qualify for the Olympics then ZOC takes over and the Government takes over for the All-Africa Games.”

He added: “We are looking to have proper preparations, a bigger training program where players camp for at least two to three weeks and we get to even pay their allowances.

“It is now the duty of the committee that looks for sponsorship to find the funding needed.”

The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association has also resolved to weekend trainings for the senior national teams in preparation of the forthcoming games.

The national sides have gone under prepared for international tournaments after camping for a few days before competitions.

Coaches have cried out to their bosses to give them more time with the players after last year’s failure to qualify for the World Championships.

ZVA secretary general, Ringisai Mapondera, believes that the weekend trainings are better than a weeklong camp.

“We are very limited, we want to have proper preparations, but finances are making it difficult for us. There is no sponsorship.

“But I believe these weekend trainings, which we have told the coaches to come up with plans for and begin as soon as possible, makes a difference rather than camping for one week only.”

The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) is yet to announce the dates and host nations of the zonal qualifiers.
