UTAKATAKA Express lead and rhythm guitarist Matthew Perego has left the band to munch greener pastures.
Hitting the ground running, the affable artiste will Sunday, launch his debut single track “Usazondisiya Dhiya”.
The song comes off his yet-to-be released solo album.
“I have gained experience over the years helping other musicians and believe I can now stand on my own. I have recorded a number of tracks so far, and the single ‘Usazondisiya Dhiya’ will introduce our group to music fans,” said Perego.
The song was produced by Jabulani Ndlovu at Truetone Studios or simply “KwaJabu”.
Perego, who is better known as the Strategy Machine in sungura circles, is supported by the The Strategic Band.
Apart from lead vocals, he also plays the lead guitar on the track.
His former workmates at Utakataka Express, Spencer Khumbulani, Evidence “Baba Gari” Tarabuka and Prince Kapatsa assisted him on the bass guitar, lead guitars and drums respectively.
“I left Utakataka Express last year to focus on my solo career and I am glad with the direction things are moving,” he said.
“If it wasn’t for Covid-19 and the ongoing lockdown, I would probably have covered reasonable ground. I have recorded enough songs for an album but we first want to test the market with this single,” said Perego.
The aspiring band leader said he was in good books with his former boss Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo and will always be available should he need assistance.
Perego has perfected his vocals over the years, providing cover for Peter at live gigs.
Many seem to agree that he has potential to grow considering his rare gift on the guitar and vocals.
“Time will tell but he seems to have the gift. I have followed him on stage especially when he leads vocals on songs like ‘Ndinotenda Dhiya’, he is a natural. Let’s hope the new single will do the trick for him,” said Tapiwa Magura.
Perego has joined the growing list of Utakataka Express band members, former and present, that are trying their solo effort.
Among them are Willard “Willo” Loti, Spencer Khumbulani and Gift “Shiga Shiga” Katulika.
