Trevor Dongo: Groover defies the odds

The Sunday Mail

HIS songs “Madhuve Wangu” and “African Girl” are enjoying heavy rotation on local radio stations. He is booked three to four months in advance for performances around the country and even juggles midweek gigs.

trevRecently he took model girlfriend Ashley Maumbe as his wife in a traditional ceremony.

And with the Zim dancehall fever overshadowing other genres, urban groover Trevor Dongo is defying the odds.

Trevor is riding the crest of a wave, shattering records with his music while organising his personal life at the same time.

While many artistes hog the limelight for the wrong reasons, the talented urban groover did the honourable thing recently when he paid a bride price for the “love of his life”, Ashley.

Ashley works at a local casino and plans to launch her own modelling agency.

Trevor is following hot on the heels of fellow artiste BaShupi, who tied the knot late last year at a glamorous ceremony that also made headlines.

Other urban groovers, singer Goodchild and producer Russo, also recently formalised relationships with their better halves.

Trevor and Ashley have been flaunting their affection for each other in public as seen on their social media networks posts.

The Sunday Mail Leisure had a chat with the recently married couple.

“Ashley has been a good omen for me,” declares Trevor as we strike up a conversation.

“I met Ashley at a friend’s boutique back in 2012 and she had come to buy a dress for a pageant since she was a model back at the time and my heart almost jumped out of my chest.”

It did not take long for the two to see that they were meant for each other and they started dating.

“It did not take minutes for us to hit it off because it was love at first sight and I can simply say she caught my eye in a split second.”

Unlike many young people who now rush into marriage, this couple dated for two years before taking the big step with Trevor paying lobola.

Many relationships have their ups and downs, but Ashley and Trevor say this has not been the case with them, as the couple claims that “it has all been rosy”.

“I don’t think we have ever had problems, I can only remember the golden moments.

“Since the day she accepted me into her life, our relationship has been golden,” says Trevor.

Celebrity relationships can be quite rocky and in some circumstances they collapse prematurely – but these two are confident theirs will be a different story.

“The good thing is that we are both Christians so the fear of God is the foundation of our relationship. I believe we will get past any obstacles,” says a demure Ashley.

She says it’s great being married to Trevor.

“Being officially married feels awesome but then at the same time I can also say the feeling is next to normal since we have been together for over two years,” says Ashley. “Trevor has never given me any problems and we just can’t get enough of each other. I have known him for a while now and I don’t think he has ever cheated on me so I trust him.”

The couple will not say when they will say their “I dos” but state that plans are underway.

Trevor rose to fame in 2001 with the release of his debut album “Ndozviita Sei”, which was followed by a string of hits including “Tivanyadzise”, “Ruva Rashe” and “Ndashamisika”, among others.
