Three people were killed while two others were injured when two goods trains collided head-on near Melfort in Mashonaland East province on Friday night.
The victims included both drivers who died on the spot while an assistant died on admission at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The injured were rushed to Marondera General Hospital and were later discharged.
The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
The Sunday Mail understands that one of the trains was ferrying granite from Harare to Mutare while the second one was ferrying nine containers of various substances and heading in the opposite direction.
National Railways of Zimbabwe spokesperson Mr Fanuel Masikati said, “The NRZ regrets to advise that three people died when two trains collided near Melfort on Friday night. Investigations to establish the cause of the accident are still underway.
“NRZ wishes to express its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and would like to wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
