There’ll be no Taiwan secession: China

CHINA has said all options are on the table to deal with the US following last week’s visit to its Taiwan region by Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in violation of the Asian giant’s sovereignty and its One-China principle.

Officials in Beijing have warned that any activity seeking “Taiwan independence will be smashed by the mighty anti-secession and pro-reunification forces of the Chinese people.”

A statement by China’s Foreign Ministry said what the US did through Ms Pelosi was like “playing with fire” and “extremely dangerous”, adding that “those who play with fire will perish by it.”

In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 2758 confirmed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and that the Chinese government is the “sole legal government representing the whole of China”.

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the One-China principle.

After attending the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation Foreign Minister’s meeting and visiting Central Asia, China’s Foreign Minister Mr Wang Yi pointed out that the One-China principle “is a red line and bottom line that cannot be crossed.”

“The One-China principle is the overwhelming consensus of the international community, the political foundation for China’s relations with other countries, the core of China’s core interests, and a red line and bottom line that cannot be crossed.

“The US side has shown the world what a bully it is. This will only make people of all countries see more clearly that the United States is the biggest destroyer of peace today.

“Some US politicians are flagrantly playing with fire on the Taiwan question for selfish gains and making themselves enemies of the 1.4 billion Chinese people. They will not come to a good end,” said Mr Wang.

China also criticised the US government for using the “Taiwan card” as an attempt to “contain China with Taiwan”, to
distort and hollow out the One-China principle and obstruct China’s complete reunification and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

“The United States should not fantasise about manipulating geopolitical games. Seeking peace, stability, development and win-win co-operation are the common aspirations of regional countries.

“The introduction of the Taiwan question into the regional strategy by the United States, which inflates tensions and stokes confrontation, is against the trend of regional development and goes against the expectations of the people in the Asia-Pacific. This is very dangerous and stupid,” added Mr Wang.

The National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee in a statement condemned Ms Pelosi’s saying it gravely impacted the political foundation of China-US relations “and sent a seriously wrong signal to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.”

“The Chinese government and the Chinese people have taken and will continue to take resolute and forceful measures to firmly safeguard China’s sovereignty, security and development interests.

“The Taiwan question bears on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. For China, there is zero room for compromise and not an inch to give,” read the NPC’s Standing Committee statement.

The Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on Tuesday said Ms Pelosi’s provocative “move is of egregious nature and has serious consequences.”

“It gravely infringes on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China. The Taiwan question is a matter of China’s internal affairs and allows no external interference. The current U.S. administration has not fixed the grave mistakes made by the previous administration.

“Instead, it has moved further to get allies on board and gang up with them to play ‘the Taiwan card’, flagrantly attack the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, and spread the erroneous ‘uncertain status of Taiwan’ theory in an attempt to internationalise the Taiwan question,” said the CPC Central Committee statement.
