The Second Republic’s gifts to Buhera

The Sunday Mail

BUHERA DISTRICT, which hosts this year’s Independence Day celebrations, has seen a remarkable increase in the number of developmental projects since the advent of the Second Republic.

Below are some of the initiatives that have changed the lives of people in the district over the past five years:

Marovanyati Dam, which was promised by President Mnangagwa to the people of Buhera in 2018, was commissioned in 2020, marking a huge milestone for the people in the semi-arid area, who used to face water shortages. The dam now supplies water to Murambinda Growth Point and various irrigation schemes, and also supports fisheries and tourism, among other economic activities.

In December 2022, President Mnangagwa officially commissioned the US$130 million Sabi Star Mine in Buhera district. The lithium mining operation now employs more than 900 people, most of whom are from the community. Encouraged by Government exhortations to uplift surrounding communities, the mine is already investing in various transformative projects.

The Government continues to invest in Dorowa Minerals, a primary producer of phosphate concentrates that are used in fertiliser production. There are already signs that the mine will reclaim its past glory, which will immensely benefit the community and business centres close to the mine

Using devolution funds, several clinics have been built or refurbished in Buhera district, where people previously travelled for several kilometres to the nearest health centre. The facilities where residents are now seeking health services include Mbundire Clinic in Ward C.

Since preparations for the Independence Day celebrations began, more than 60 solar-powered boreholes have been drilled in Buhera district so far.

About 100 primary and secondary schools were solarised in Manicaland province and over 50 are in Buhera district.

Overall, just as with many districts across the country, Buhera is not being left behind as President Mnangagwa’s administration pulls all the stops to lift people out of poverty into prosperity.
