BY changing eating habits one can begin to eat themselves to health and not an early grave. Lifestyle diseases arising from poor eating habits and unhealthy greasy foods have in recent years become leading killers compared to other diseases. Cases of sudden deaths from heart failure have sadly become common. But these can be rectified by adopting healthy eating habits.

Below is a recipe by Mr Nattver Patel, an advocate for the popularisation of the Guacamole “Gwaka Mole” dish in Zimbabwe, which meant to boost one’s health. The Guacamole is a Mexican dish that features predominantly the avocado, but each of the main food items on the recipe can be home grown.

Ingredients

Three medium avocados or four small ones;

One firm tomato, finely diced;

Half white onion or red onion;

Half-a-cup chopped cilantro;

Two tablespoons fresh lemon or lime juice; (optional salt and pepper to taste).

Method

Open the avocados and scoop out the flesh. An easy way is to cut length-wise around the pit and then using a chef’s knife strike the pit and then twist the knife so you can easily remove the pit and scoop out the flesh.

Mash the flesh with a fork; it can still have hard parts, follow your preference.

Stir the other ingredients enjoy right away or store in the refrigerator. A trick is to put a plastic wrap that touches the guacamole so it does not brown because of contact with air. The other trick is to keep the pit in the mix and that too will prevent “browning”. The Guacamole dish better enjoyed with tortillas, but others prefer to have it with raw vegetables or simply right off the spoon.
