The Grand Tour: Jeremy Clarkson’s new show becomes biggest in Amazon’s history

The Sunday Mail

“The Grand Tour” has officially become Amazon Prime’s most successful show of all time after the opening episode of Jeremy Clarkson’s new series became the most-streamed debut ever.

The motoring programme’s debut, from the former Top Gear trio of Jeremy, 56, Richard Hammond and James May, was the biggest premiere for a show, surpassing Amazon original series “The Man in the High Castle” from 2015.

Amazon released a statement last week in which the company said that not only did millions of people stream the first episode but new members joining was at one of its highest points.

“The Grand Tour” made its highly anticipated launch last week and received critical acclaim after the first episode became available on the video-on-demand service.

Fans also took to social media to hail “The Grand Tour” a success, with a new episode dropping each week from now until early next year.

“The guys are back, doing what they do best, the chemistry between Jeremy, Richard and James is what makes The Grand Tour so entertaining,” said Jeff Bezos, chief executive officer of Amazon.

He added, “Their creativity, along with the amazing production quality and 4K HDR streaming, has Prime members responding in a big way. Kudos and congrats to the whole team.”

Episode one of The Grand Tour saw the threesome testing out hypercars as they went around the world in search of the perfect motor.

The live audience segments of the programme were filmed in California and also featured guest appearances from Hollywood stars Jeremy Renner and Armie Hammer as well as Carol Vorderman pretending to be dead.

While the budget of The Grand Tour remains a mystery, the impressive opening to the first episode is thought to have cost £2.5 million.
