TELONE gave Mr Evans Pakati a cash reward after he assisted in the apprehension of thieves that had made off with copper distribution point cables.
Mr Pakati, a security guard with J&P Security, was recently presented with a US$300 reward in Harare.
Mr Pakati was on duty in Greendale, Harare when he saw two men stealing 1,5m of copper distribution point cables. He confronted the two and they ran away.
The duo was later arrested and the cable was recovered.
The accused are charged with contravening the Criminal Codification Act and face up to 10 years imprisonment. Colonel (Retired) Spencer Muzambi represented TelOne and handed over the reward to Mr Pakati.
Rtd Col Muzambi expressed gratitude and encouraged Zimbabweans to emulate the security guard saying it was the duty of every citizen to assist in protection of national assets.
“Loyal Zimbabwean citizens do not sit and watch as precious materials are being stolen. At TelOne, we cherish those that stand up in defence of national resources. We value our customers and the fact that our services are there to boost the performance of the economy,” he said.
Added Rtd Col Muzambi: “Mr Pakati risked his life to confront the duo and further assisted by testifying against them in court. We have a policy of rewarding those who assist us in apprehending thieves and we encourage others to report theft.”
Mr Pakati said he was grateful to TelOne’s and promised to keep up the good work.
In 2015, TelOne announced the installation of alarm systems on its infrastructure, including copper cables. The installation would reduce theft of equipment.
The project, which is still ongoing, will ensure vandals are caught and face the law.
