Surely, not Ocean Mushure!

THERE has always been a belief that most football journalists are Dynamos fans, an important component of the club’s mythical seven million supporters.

How this belief came about Yours Truly doesn’t know and wouldn’t want to be schooled about either because there are much better things to indulge in.

There is nothing wrong about a journalist being a supporter of a certain team. However, there is everything wrong when the love for that team drips through the pain, into the copy and finally into the streets for our consumption as news.

If these journos are DeMbare fans they should just come out and declare their allegiances.

They should declare their local football teams of choice in the same manner that the charismatic pair of Mike Madoda and Barry Manandi has made us aware of their love for Bosso and DeMbare respectively.

Will those compliments on Mike and Barry blow my cover and give away my gender? No, I don’t think so Mr Editor; and thank you for sexing up my missives.

Where I come from, the social media arena, we can butcher the Queen’s language and still come across as sophisticated, come across as one who talks football, the one “anotaura bhora”.

And the trending topic of late on Facebook and the WhatsApp groups has been Ocean Mushure and his form.

The Dynamos captain has been on fire all right. However, I sense a mischievous attempt to dress him in Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year robes long before the defining period of the season has panned out.

From where I sit some sections are doing what Max McCombs and Donald Shaw discovered through a study on the 1968 American presidential election.

Journalists are setting an agenda. An agenda aimed at making Mushure the 2017 Soccer Star of the Year. No doubt Ocean is enjoying a purple patch but one swallow does not make a summer.

There are have been, at least, two better players than the utility man in my book. This fascination with Ocean is unnecessary and misleading.

Without mincing words, I believe Ngezi Platinum Stars’ Walter Mukanga has been better than Mushure this season. I dare say Mukanga has been the best player on show so far.

Underline “so far”. The second player I believe has been better than the media’s pin-up boy is not far from where one finds Mushure – the Dynamos dressing room.

Cameroonian import Ntouba Epoupa has done the business for the Glamour Boys.

And it must be remembered that the brilliant stuff that Mushure did at the Cosafa Castle Cup will not be considered when the day of reckoning comes.

Soccer Star of the Year selection is based on what the players did during the league campaign and thankfully the selection panel is no longer exclusively made up of members of the media.

A diversified selection panel, featuring club captains and coaches, ensures that we don’t get abominations such as making Evans Chikwaikwai, Murape Murape and Tawanda Muparati Soccer Stars of the Year.

The decision to make all the votes public was also a game changer! Before exiting the scene, allow Yours Truly to give you his best XI players of the season so far.

Soccer Star of the Year Walter Mukanga, First Runner-up Ntouba of Dynamos and Second Runner-up Ian Nekati of FC Platinum.

And the rest of the clique will comprise Mushure, Munyaradzi Diya of How Mine, the Chicken Inn pair of Innocent Muchaneka and Devine Lunga, the Rhinos Donald Mudadi and Sydney Linyama, Bosso’s Rahman Kutsanzira and former Bantu Rovers goal machine Bukhosi Sibanda.

Sir exits the scene!
