STYLE CORNER: Make it a memorable journey Festive season is around the corner and just like celebrities Rihanna, Bonang and Steve Tyler, we also need to have a smooth travel experience.

THERE is a reason why some people manage to have great holiday pictures – they know how to pack when travelling.
Personally, I always find it difficult to get that picture showing my style and the beautiful scenery at the places I would have visited.

The year is almost over and for some of us, it is that time of the year to travel before our resolutions are fulfilled – perhaps many of our pledges were too ambitious to achieve in 365 days.

Festive season is around the corner and just like celebrities Rihanna, Bonang and Steve Tyler, we also need to have a smooth travel experience.

Festive season is around the corner and just like celebrities Rihanna, Bonang and Steve Tyler, we also need to have a smooth travel experience.

Take for example, one of my goals for this year was to find the perfect jumpsuit for my upcoming holiday trip but alas, the search continues.

However, there is no need to be sad because as the year ends, it marks the beginning of the coming year.
As the festive season sets in, the Victoria Falls Carnival is drawing closer and there is going to be a lot of tourist traffic as international travellers visit the country.

Having learned from my past mistakes, these are some of the major guidelines for smooth leisure travelling. Whether you choose to travel by road, rail or air; most people are unsure how to plan for the trip and what to pack.

1. Carry a spare outfit
Sometimes when you are in transit there might be a delay or your baggage might get lost thereby leaving you with no toiletries or a change of clothes. Travel packs that follow aviation regulations to carry essential toiletries are also available. It is advisable to have a spare outfit and underwear in case of such a case.

2. Travel light
On your way to the destination, roll the light fabric items to save space in your bag, this makes them more compact. Faith Kingori, a business consultant who jet sets for work purposes says: “You should travel light by packing less items. Pack mix and match tops and bottoms you can wear with neutral flats and comfortable formal shoes”.
Patience Tendaupenyu travels for leisure and also agrees with keeping baggage light: “You never know how many nice souvenirs and items you might have to carry on your way back.”

3. Plan your travel itinerary
Your itinerary is supposed to be in place way ahead of schedule so that you are guaranteed of that smooth enjoyable holiday that is free from any glitches.

4. Stay connected online
Search for weather forecasts at the intended destination so that you pack the right clothing and cosmetics. A good online resource is Trip Advisor, travellers give reviews and tips for a smooth journey on hotels and restaurants.
Given social media trends, sharing your trip experience on your smartphone is also important. Remember to carry your charger or power bank to ensure that battery power is not a problem.
When travelling within Africa, you can use MAPP Africa, a social media application to share and connect with your loved ones on your smartphone. The more you use the application, the more points you get for a chance to win African designer items or a trip to an African festival.
But after everything is said and done, the most important aspect of your trip is to have fun.
