“THE problem of dressing and style is for women not men – women are the ones who stress about what to wear, looking good and all,” says a shop assistant in a Harare menswear boutique.

As I interact with both men and women, I realise that many men out there are of the same belief, that style problems are a female issue.

But that is not the case. Too many Zimbabwean men have terrible style.

Because of cultural beliefs and the general dominance of men in society, Zimbabwean males get away with murder when it comes to fashion and related etiquette.

Some women struggle to have the awkward conversation on style with their husbands. Those who try usually give up after a few attempts and much resistance from their men.

And yet there are many men in desperate need of upping their style game. Style does not discriminate – it is for everyone.

In my chats with stylists and buyers in men’s boutiques and some fashion designers, some key trends stood out.

Shoes make the walk

Part of a man’s swagger is how they walk and their shoes make the sound, and add to the effect. The stylish shoe trend, according to a stylist in Wall Street Boutique in Borrowdale, is patent leather for formal shoes. Patent leather are shoes with a glossy, shiny finish.

For casual wear, one can never go wrong with loafers that show off the ankle. Such shoes need to be worn with secret socks to prevent shoe damage from sweat.

And always remember to match the shoe colour to the belt.

It will suit you when it’s slim fit

All the stylists and fashion designers I have talked to mention the buzz word in how the clothing should be slim fit.

Slim fit clothing has a snug fit and enhances appearance by showing off the man’s physique.

Gone are the days when baggy trousers and oversized clothes were the definition of men’s style.

The trinity of suits

Enhancing the gentleman look is the return of the three-piece suit.

A jacket, waistcoat and trousers are distinguishing men of style from ordinary men this season.

Power in the print

Bold prints are the favourite choice for jackets. Have them in either plaid print or for the Afrocentric, an African traditional print. There is no need for men to fade into the background.

For casual attire, hints of print can be incorporated into clothes for a modern take on print. Lastly, a man should at least have a watch and a good pair of sunglasses to make it through a stylish summer.

Always remember that the suit does not make the man, a man makes the suit.
