A Hurungwe West woman allegedly axed her mother-in-law to death following an argument over why the former was not falling pregnant.

Lingiwe Mugabe of Chinovhiringa Village under Chief Nyamhunga died at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare last week after the alleged axe attack by daughter-in-law Trish Kutadzaushe (30) on June 8, 2015.

Kutadzaushe initially appeared before Karoi magistrate Mr Obedience Matare charged with attempted murder a fortnight ago. That charge has been amended to murder following Mugabe’s death.

She is in custody and will be back in court on July 9.

On the morning of June 8, Mugabe was at Mugabe Bus Stop in Chinovhiringa Village, Sengwe waiting for transport to take her to Magunje Growth Point.

It is alleged that Kutadzaushe was some 60m away with an axe in hand as she searched for firewood.

The court was told that Mugabe started inciting Kutadzaushe by blaming her for the lack of children, insinuating she was failing in her “duty” as a woman to provide offspring for her son.

The two allegedly exchanged strong words, and an angry Kutadzaushe struck her mum-in-law with an axe twice on the right temple and on the back of the head.

Mugabe was treated at Sengwe Clinic and then was transferred to Karoi Hospital, where staff referred her to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

At Parirenyatwa, Mugabe was put on life support until her death.

She was buried last Wednesday in Chinovhiringa Village.
