TOURIST arrivals from South Africa plunged 36 percent in the six month period ending March 31 2014

despite the Southern African country being Zimbabwe’s major source market for tourists on the continent last year. The drop underlined a 19 percent drop of arrivals from the region.

However, there was strong growth from Asia, with visitors rising 25 percent during the review period, while Europe recorded a five percent jump.

Listed hotelier African Sun Limited reported yesterday that on the overall foreign arrivals grew by two percent in the review period. The group’s occupancy fell 41 percent from 47 percent in the same period a year earlier as more rooms came on stream following the refurbishment exercise.

Revenue per average room (RevPAR) consequently slowed to US$40 from US$44 a year ago. ASL reported a US$766 172 loss from a profit of US$914 432 in the comparative period.
