TALENTED mbira musician Sasha Amadhuve says she is happy with the renewed interest in traditional music by local fans.

The singer, who celebrates her 39th birthday today, reckons an energetic group of young mbira players has helped turn the tide.

She was, however, quick to thank her predecessors who paved the way for them.

“The situation has changed in the recent past. Traditional music, particularly mbira, used to attract numbers but there was a time when things went down. Emerging genres like Zim dancehall started enjoying a fair share of the market.

“However, the situation is changing. There is renewed interest in mbira music. I believe we have been working hard to win back fans while the public is also beginning to appreciate their culture more,” said Sasha.

She also thanked promoters for keeping the faith in traditional music.

“There are people who work behind the scenes to guarantee our success. They include Machembere (Nyasha Dope) and Itai Motsi.”

Machembere, who is Bira Remadzisahwira founder and director, reckons Sasha is a gifted musician with potential to go far with proper support.

They have organised a birthday bash for Sasha, which will be held at Club Las Vegas in Southerton today.

“We want people to come in their numbers to celebrate Sasha’s 39th birthday. She has achieved a lot since embarking on her solo career some years back,” said Machembere.

She encouraged the singer to continue working hard.

“I wish to say happy birthday to her.

“She is representing women well through her hard work, especially in this male-dominated industry.

“Bira Remadzisahwira will not tire in supporting her journey and we are proud to be part of the history. We are proud of her as one of our cultural ambassadors,” added Machembere.

Among the artistes expected to grace the event are fellow mbira singer Diana Samkange, dendera crooner Suluman “Sulu” Chimbetu, Progress Chipfumo, Peter Moyo, Ammi Jamanda and Wanai.

“Everything is in place and we hope to host an electric event. We have striven to deliver flawless shows over the years. Sasha frequently plays at this joint (Club Las Vegas) and she has never disappointed. Let’s support her and every other female musician in the country,” said joint proprietor Itai Motsi.
