THE Southern African Development Initiators (SADI), a platform that focuses on facilitating the empowerment of citizens in the region, will this year host Mother’s Day celebrations in Victoria Falls.

The event will run from May 7 to 9 under the Women’s Month theme “Break the Bias”.

Guest of honour, former Malawi President Dr Joyce Banda, will lead a line-up of powerful and influential women that include Zimbabwe Gender Commission chief executive Mrs Virginia Muwanigwa, Judge President of the Industrial Court Honourable Justice Annan Petje from Botswana and The Sunday Mail Editor Victoria Ruzvidzo, .

The event seeks to celebrate women and their role in the family, society and business world. It is also a platform to showcase that women have the power to make significant changes in Africa if they stand together.

In a statement, SADI secretary-general Mr Blessing Jeke said women empowerment is a key driver for economic growth.

“Women empowerment is a key driver of economic activity in any country. It is critical to effect gender balance in the community and strive towards mainstreaming gender equality in key sectors,” he said. “For this reason, we have come up with an event to have our very own Zimbabwean women learn and network with other trailblazers from diverse cultures and backgrounds. We are encouraging all women to take this opportunity and be a part of this auspicious event.”

After the event, SADI delegates will visit Musuna village in Hwange where they intend to raise funds and create projects for marginalised women. Other delegates expected to grace the event are Serene Highness Princess Corinna Zu Sayne-wittgenstein from Germany, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Subregional Office Director Eunice Kamwendo from Malawi, and the chief executive of the Empowered Women Excel Edna Mukurazhizha.
