THE Rotary Club of Msasa (RCM) has partnered with Malaria Partners International (MPI) and the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe (MCZ) to undertake a malaria elimination programme in Mudzi District.

The campaign is meant to complement the Ministry of Health and Child Care’s efforts to reduce malaria-related mortality in communities along the Zimbabwe/Zambia border. The three organisations recently donated test kits and supported the training of health workers in the district.

Speaking at the donation handover ceremony held at Kotwa District Hospital, RCM president Mr Max Ngangira said:

“This donation is the beginning of more to come, as the club gets more involved in malaria elimination programmes in this district and at national level.”

Rotary Club malaria project champion Ms Sarah Tembedza said cases of malaria in the district usually rise during the rainy season.

“The club sourced funding and donated malaria test kits in 2019.

“And on September 25, 2021, the club again donated 250 test kits and (facilitated a) two days refresher training for community health workers.

“This was a drop in the ocean, considering that the cases will continue to rise, especially in the coming rainy season,” she said.

In accepting the donation, the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe Mudzi District bishop, Reverend Edmore Chihota, commended the organisations for the gesture.

“We appreciate the good works of donating testing kits in our district. However, we are appealing to the club to extend help to all the 28 wards in Mudzi before expanding to other districts and to fund food and transport costs for the indoor residual-spraying team.”
