Five people died Thursday morning and 11 others were seriously injured when a haulage truck and a pick-up truck collided at the intersection of Harare Drive and Borrowdale Road.

The robots at the intersection were not functional when the accident occurred.

Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident to The Sunday Mail Online.

“I can confirm that we have had an unfortunate accident at the intersection of Harare Drive and Borrowdale Road when a haulage truck and a pick-up truck collided. The robots at this intersection were not functional at the time of the accident,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.

“Five people died on the spot while eleven were seriously injured and have been admitted at different local hospitals.

“Investigations to ascertain the cause of the accident are still underway and more information will be availed in due course.”

He urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching intersections and reduce speed in adverse weather conditions.

“As police we are urging motorists to always exercise extreme caution when approaching intersections especially those with non-functional traffic lights and avoid speeding during this rain season as the breaking distance is affected by the wetness of the roads.”

Road traffic accidents are usually rampant around this time of the year due to rains that usually affect the functionality of robots and reduce the breaking distance of vehicles.

Excitement as we approach the festive season is also attributed to the cause of accidents this time of the year.
