Remembering a man of the people

The Sunday Mail

When I heard Chegutu Municipality Chamber Secretary (Acting Town Clerk) Mr Jacob Chikuruwo summoning me to his office in the morning of July 29, 2021, I thought we were to discuss on the challenges of giving rate payers an exquisite service delivery. To my shock, he was to drop the sad news that the Town Clerk, Mr Alex Mandigo had passed on.

A dark cloud once again, hung over the entire town of Chegutu, few days after the untimely death of the Deputy Mayor Councillor Shumba.

True to the sad message, the Town Clerk had died at 06:15am in Harare after battling Covid-19 related complications as pronounced by the doctor’s report, leaving a great chrism at Chegutu Municipality and other platforms where he was a member. He was 57.

Born on April 21, 1964, Mandigo grew up in Mutare were he did both his primary and secondary education. He proceeded to do his teacher training programme in Mutare.

After the completion of the teacher training programme, Mandigo perused a teaching career in Mashonaland West, Mhangura and other surrounding schools.

In 1984, he enrolled at the University of Zimbabwe for his Certificate in Education while already pursuing a teaching career.

In 1990, he enrolled for a Salesmanship, Sales Management and Marketing course with the Cambridge of Tutorial College.

Mandigo was back at the UZ to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Education which he completed in 1997.

He was back again in class at the Zimbabwe Open University to pursue studies in Masters of Educational Administration, Planning and Policy Studies which he completed in 2003.

His career in Local Government started as a district administrator in Mashonaland West before joining Chegutu Municipality on August 1, 2005, after beating other candidates in the interviews for the Town Clerk’s post.

Since then, Mandigo has been holding that position, working tirelessly for the betterment of Chegutu as a town until his time of death.

Fellow workmates spoke glowing about the manner Mandigo paraded himself among others and how it will not be easy to quickly erase memories that they have had with him during the time that he was at the Town House where he made a lot of achievements bagging numerous accolades in the process.

Among other achievements he made, there was improvement in Chegutu town water situation.

Sewer system, human capital development, expansion of  Chegutu town a s a whole as well as initiating partnerships with big organisations such as Zimplats that benefited the Chegutu Community as a whole.

Mandigo leaves behind his wife Wendy and children.

May his dear soul rest in eternal peace.
