Peter Dube please say something – anything!

The Sunday Mail

DO we ever learn?

First it was the infamous Mapostori, now it’s the Dynamos fans.

Fighting the police is a zero sum game. There is always only one winner as the DeMbare hooligans will soon find out.

The misguided elements who threw stones at the police will soon have the ZRP knocking on their doors thanks to video evidence.

But what reasonable explanation can there be for football fans to turn into monsters who are ready to devour anything in their sight, including police dogs?

The barbaric scenes we witnessed at Rufaro on May 15 are as shameful as Webster Chikengezha’s claim that his windscreen requires US$1 800 to be replaced. Maybe the DeMbare secretary-general meant R1 800.

What is even more shameful is that it took a statement from Makhosini Hlongwane for the Sports and Recreation Commission, the Premier Soccer League and Zifa to condemn the barbarism.

Kudos to Hlongwane for the hard-hitting statement condemning the violence at Rufaro and Madzimai Cecelia Gambe’s Sakubva saga.

SRC director-general Joseph Muchechetere described Gambe’s behaviour as embarrassing. Phillip Chiyangwa said Zifa will come down hard on Gambe. PSL communications and media liason officer Kudzai Bare said the league was “deeply concerned” by the violent acts.

Excuse me, but Va Shagare sees something wrong with this picture – Joseph Muchechetere, Phillip Chiyangwa and Kudzai Bara.

There is everything wrong with Kudzai Bara or Kudzai Bere, whatever that little girl’s name is, commenting on such a serious matter on behalf of the PSL. Bara is too small a person, irrelevant even, to authoritatively comment on such issues.

Where was the PSL chairman Peter Dube or the chief executive Kenny Ndebele?

A whole Government minister issues a statement condemning violence and a reactive league adds its voice to the chorus but chooses to do so through someone whose face the nation cannot even recognise?

Someone is sleeping at the wheel at the PSL.

Dube looks like a man full of humility, a man who is media shy, but some matters need the father of the house to step up.

The PSL chairman also needs to start being visible; it comes with the office he occupies.

If Dube cannot comment on violence at PSL matches, then what on Earth will he comment on? Graying hair?

The other day I saw the PSL chairman struggling to gain entry into Rufaro with the bouncer who was manning the gate asking some uncomfortable questions.

After the brief standoff and with Dube a few meters away, a friend I was with asked the marshal why he had just given the PSL boss grief.

The answer was quick in coming.

“Handimuzive plus zvaakapfeka mahwani (I don’t know him and the way he is dressed is not befitting of a PSL chairman),” he said.

Dube took over from a man who was charismatic and perhaps we expect him to live up to the standards set by Twine Phiri.

Peter Dube my brother, you need to say something, anything.
