The Sunday Mail

HARARE is truly a city that does not sleep – while many people do not like missing their Sunday church service, others do not miss the action at their favourite Sunday hangouts for anything.
Here are some of the events that are lighting up the capital today.
Splash, Motor Action Sundays get hotter

Open air joints have become popular with revellers

Open air joints have become popular with revellers

For years, Mereki in Harare’s Warren Park D has been one of the most popular leisure spots in Harare for its meat, sadza and salads. Not anymore. The entertainment side has lately been on a high with the Splash Car Wash Sunday sessions adding spice to an already kicking chill out zone.
With the Bodyslam family hosting these Sunday bashes, the space is always packed with people trickling in from noon to enjoy the music and drinks till late in the night. For anyone who is up for outdoor partying, this is one of the ideal places to spend your afternoon. From the car park area of Mereki, all roads lead to Motor Action Sports Club, which is located in Eastlea.
With Motor Action Football Club being a thing of the past, the sports club has been transformed into a party zone and has emerged as one of Harare’s most vibrant open air joints this summer. Dubbed Motor Action Sundays – and powered by Platinum Entertainment, these sessions have been attracting hundreds of party people from all corners of the capital and beyond.
The number of people who throng this new party venue has been growing every weekend to the extent that parking has become a nightmare with some of the patrons parking as far as Chapman Golf Club, which is several hundred meters away from the sports club.
Interestingly, these sessions have become a favourite for many celebrities who include Trae Yung, Killer T, Garry B, Seh Calaz, Smylie, DJ Fleva, Levels and PTK, just to name a few. With a strong DJ line-up comprising of Skatta, Yung Fresh, T Fresh, Candyman, MC Phatman and Big Dolla Bruce, the music does not stop playing until the early hours of Monday morning.
Young Igwe, Sulu combine forces
Today, the fired-up combination of Suluman “Sulu” Chimbetu and Peter “Young Igwe” Moyo rekindles its romance with Hararians in what promises to be an explosive family show.
The dendera and sungura musician will be exchanging notes at the Zebra Village in Mbare.
Peter or Young Igwe is currently riding high following the release of his latest offering “Mabasa aMwari” which has been well received by music lovers. Add to that the dance-of-the-moment “Bata Pasi” coupled with chanter Shiga Shiga’s inimitable chants and you have a great show. At the same time, Sulu, who commands a cult following, is sampling new songs from his forthcoming album that is set for release anytime soon.
What makes this show explosive is that both outfits have solid performers that have a good stage presence. Besides it will be Sulu’s first major family gig in the capital following a long hiatus since the musician’s return from Australia. For Peter, this will be more of a welcome back gig as the Utakataka Express frontman and his team were in South Africa for two gigs. Thus nothing short of fireworks is expected.
Spruced up City Sports returns
The festive season is always a time for hasty and sometimes dramatic decisions in showbiz. Numerous new clubs, especially upmarket, usually sprout while several others already running spruce up their images to compete for the “easy” festive season greenback.
Even in 2008 at the height of economic hardships in Zimbabwe when a six pack of beer cans could go for as much as US$18 – new clubs still opened and for two or so months were packed with the young and the young at heart, spending like there was tomorrow.
Last week, Biggie Chinoperekwei, a music promoter and owner of several clubs in and around the capital unveiled his new look City Sports Bar in style, first with a cocktail for the media and loyal customers then with a beauty pageant and live music from on fire Peter Moyo and his Utakataka Express.
To say the club is magnificent would be an understatement – it is all that and more. The guy just knows what imbibers want. It is a one-stop-shop for any drinker or party animal, knowing fully well that the car is parked outside and safe. For those not driving, taxis are available outside 24/7.
ZiJudgement Yard @ Long Cheng
Meanwhile, this Saturday’s Judgement Yard celebrates its third anniversary on ZiFM Stereo at the Long Cheng Plaza in the capital.
This is a show not to miss with a star-studded line-up of artistes and DJs that include Winky D, Soul Jah Love, Killer T, Seh Calaz, Kinnah, Freeman and Dobba Don, among others.
The gig starts at 12pm.
Judgement Yard is one of the biggest dancehall stables in the country and their mix tapes have proved to be popular among music fans.
