ZIMBABWE Republic Police has impounded 67 buses for violating Covid-19 lockdown regulations that prohibit inter-city and cross-border travel since July.

Of the total, 41 buses were impounded in Masvingo, 10 in Harare, while Mashonaland West, Mashonaland East and Manicaland accounted for seven, five and four buses, respectively.

In a statement on Friday, police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi expressed concern over operators and travellers who continue to defy Government’s directive.

“The statistics are an indication that some people continue to disobey the law. Transporters are strongly warned against defying the safety measures put in place by the Government,” he said.

During the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, police will only clear commercial cargo and essential services to pass through checkpoints and roadblocks around the country.

Police will also conduct stop-and-search blitz and raids to account for people who are illegally operating bars and nightclubs.

Shebeen operators will also be arrested.

“The public is reminded that all public gatherings are banned and funerals should be guided by the figure of 30 mourners as stipulated by the Government,” added Nyathi.

“Any pirate taxis, mushikashika or private vehicles found to be carrying passengers during the holiday will be dealt with in terms of the country’s laws.”
