THE Eastern Highlands is set to host the country’s first-ever 100-mile ultra trail run – the RuNyanga Ultra Trail Run – between September 29 and October 1, 2023.

Event organiser Ryan Moss said: “This is the first-ever 100-mile race to come to Zimbabwe and especially the Eastern Highlands.

“We are super-excited to bring this to Zimbabwe and grow trail running as a sport, and to get people out of their comfort zone for adventure and better health.

“The run is aimed at bringing international runners in the future but we are not closing it off to any runners.

“This year, we have got 160 runnersand 90 percent of them are coming out of Zimbabwe.”

He said the race will become an annual event.

The RuNyanga Ultra Trail Run consists of four race disciplines – the 100-mile race, the 50-mile race, the 50 km race, and the 30 km race.

“The 30km race is there to introduce runners into trail running, and hopefully they can progress from there into the bigger race,” added Moss.

“I grew up in the Eastern Highlands and it’s a beautiful area of Zimbabwe.

“We want to encourage tourism to the area while working with communities and stakeholders from within the area. We also chose the Eastern Highlands because there are a lot of mountains. With trail running you need a lot of mountains.”
