ZIMBABWE recorded an 18 percent increase in aquaculture production during the first quarter of the year, a senior Government official has said.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development deputy Minister Davis Marapira said more farmers are developing interest in fisheries.
“The 2021-2022 Second Round Crop and Livestock Assessment indicates an 18 percent increase in the number of fish ponds from 5 634 in 2021 to 6 988 as of April 2022.
“The increase has largely been in the small-holder sector and the actual numbers are expected to be higher now as more farmers are venturing into fish farming,” he said.
Deputy Minister Marapira said production of fish is expected to increase this season to 7 000 tonnes, up from 5 000 in 2021.
