Government wants to uplift people living with disabilities through policies that enable them to actively participate in the economy.

Speaking at the launch of the National Labour Migration and the National Disability Policies in Harare on Wednesday, President Mnangagwa said his administration is “determined to develop robust and responsive policies that meet the expectations of people with disabilities”.

“As we do, it is incumbent on all of us to shift from perceiving people with disabilities as objects of charity,” said the President.

The two policies are expected to enhance the safe and legal movement of labour and promotion of disability rights as enshrined in the Constitution and international conventions Zimbabwe is signatory to.

United Nations resident coordinator, Ms Maria Ribeiro, said the policies are a culmination of efforts by the Government of Zimbabwe and partners to advance inclusion and reduce inequality.

“The UN recognises the inclusive nature of the consultations that shaped the development of the two policies.

“I am pleased to note that the UN system has been part of these processes providing technical and financial support,” she said.

The disability policy, she added, positions Zimbabwe as a global frontrunner on disability inclusion.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, senior Government officials, representatives of labour and disability groups and UN agencies, among others.
