Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Milk Day on Wednesday, with local producers urged to boost milk output.
Speaking at World Milk Day celebrations held at Malwatte Farm in Marondera, Minister of State for Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Apollonia Munzverengwi said:
“The annual milk production in Zimbabwe is 79,6 million litres per year. This, however, falls far short of the 140 million litres per year local demand for the country, and the gap is filled with imports.
“The gap between demand versus supply should be seen as a huge opportunity for businesses in the dairy sector.”
World Milk Day is celebrated across the world on June 1 every year.
The day was established in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations to help people recognise the importance of milk.
