AROUND 3 600 people attempted to register multiple times during the first phase of the biometric voter registration (BVR) blitz in February.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)’s high-tech voter registration system later flushed them out during the de-duplication exercise.

It has been established that most of them were receiving monetary incentives from some civic society organisations after producing a voter registration slip.

The elections management body also established that only a few people were unaware of their registration status.

Phase One of the registration blitz ran from February 1 to February 28, while the second phase ended last week.

ZEC’s BVR system uses modern techniques such as fingerprint mapping to flush out multiple registrants.

ZEC spokesperson Commissioner Jasper Mangwana said measures have been taken to ensure that duplicate registration is dealt with during the registration exercise.

“We had about 3 600 duplicate voters during the first phase of the voter registration blitz and this was due to a number of reasons,” he said.

“Some of the reasons behind the duplicate registration include receiving incentives, ignorance about the voter registration process and those seeking transfers.

“So, we are appealing to CSOs and political parties to stop giving incentives to induce registration and voting.”
