Over 200 schools are expected to converge at Prince Edward School this weekend, for a two-day chess tournament.

The chess development tournament, which will consist of 100 primary schools and 100 secondary schools, is a collaborative effort between Crystal Candy Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF).

It is aimed at grooming international chess masters from a tender age.

The two-day chess tournament, which begins on Saturday, will feature an individual format and will encompass five age groups from the under-eight to Under-16 levels.

Crystal Candy Zimbabwe, who will be the main sponsor of this weekend’s tournament, have also partnered with ZCF for the recently-launched Crystal Candy National Schools Chess League, which is already running.

“ZCF is grateful to Crystal Candy Zimbabwe for seeing the potential in chess, and committing its resources to lift the sport,” said ZCF president Mucha Mkanganwi.

“We want to have more children in schools playing chess.

“Once we catch them at such a young age, it will be easier to identify, nurture and cultivate the talent towards having more International Masters and even Grandmasters in the country.”
