Zimbabwe Young Nurses Association (ZYNA), an organisation representing young nurses in Zimbabwe, has hailed amendments to the Health Services Act, which they believe will help public health personnel stick to the Hippocratic Oath.

The new law makes it illegal for public healthcare workers to strike for more than three days.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, ZYNA chairperson Ms Cynthia Chisiri said strikes in the health sector places lives of those seeking medical attention at risk.

“We welcome this Act, and our position as Zimbabwe Young Nurses Association is that nursing is a calling, and we should put our patients first then the rest follows,” she said.

“We believe in dialogue with the leadership, before an industrial action to avoid putting lives at risk.”

Life, she also said, can never be recovered once lost.

“Moreover, strikes will never take our country forward.”
