Veld fires have burnt over 744 431 hectares of land, with 3 067 fire incidents recorded, according to latest updates from the Environmental Management Authority (EMA).

EMA said as the country nears the end of the veld fire season, the cumulative burnt area is around 744 431 hectares.

During the same period last year, 1 602 988 hectares had been burnt.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, EMA environmental education and publicity manager Mrs Amkela Sidange said that veld fires are on the decline.

“Over 744 431 hectares have been burnt to date, compared to 1 602 988 hectares last year,” she said.

“Our target is to meet the reduction for the area burnt to 800 000 and below.”

According to EMA, a total of 3 905 farmers have been fined, 71 dockets and 27 cases opened, for failing to put in place standard fireguards, and for starting fires that caused extensive damage to the environment and property.

“The veld fires have destroyed tobacco nurseries, wheat produce, electric poles, eight huts, and two houses,” said Mrs Sidange.

“Notably the causes of the veld fires so far have been identified to be anthropogenic in nature, specifically due to, land clearing, arson, illegal mining, poor ash disposal, and hunting.”
