Mr Peter Vowles has been appointed the new United Kingdom Ambassador to Zimbabwe.

He will succeed Ambassador Melanie Robinson.

In a statement on Thursday morning, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said Mr Vowles, who once worked as a teacher in Zimbabwe in the early 1990s, will take over in September.

“Mr Peter Vowles has been appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Zimbabwe in succession to Ms Melanie Robinson CMG. Mr Vowles will take up his appointment in September 2023.”

According to his curriculum vitae, Mr Vowles is currently the director of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, a post that he will leave to take up the new role in Zimbabwe.

Previously, he has worked as the UK’s head of mission in Myanmar and as Department for International Development director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories, among other posts.

From 1996 to 1999, Mr Vowles was the policy and programme manager for the Students Partnership Worldwide programme in Zimbabwe.

He previously worked as a teacher in Zimbabwe from 1992 to 1993.
