Tobacco sales have generated US$766 million as of day 61 of the crop’s marketing season, latest figures from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) shows.
This is a significant improvement from US$494 million generated over the same period last year.
“A total of 254 million kg of golden leaf was sold at an average of US$3 per kg by Thursday June 8 2023,” said TIMB.
About 3,1 million bales have been sold since the beginning of the marketing season on a mass of 3,2 million bales that were laid.
Auction floors have taken delivery of 18 million kg of the golden leaf, while contractors account for 236 million kg.
The highest price achieved to date is US$6,10 per kg, while the lowest is US$0,10.
