NEW: Tobacco sales yield US$143 million

THE country’s tobacco farmers have so far pocketed US$143 million from the sale of 41 million kilogrammes of the golden leaf, as at Day 17 of the ongoing marketing season.

According to the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB), the 41 million kg of tobacco was sold at an average price of US$3,49, which is higher than last year’s average price around the same time of US$2,98.

Comparably, farmers had sold 32 million kgs of tobacco during the same time last year, to the tune of US$96,3 million.

Of the 41 million kgs sold to date, 38,4 million kgs was sold through contract, while 2,5 million has been sold through the auction floors.
