THE 2023/2024 Harare Basketball Association (HBA) Super Six league has begun to take shape after 10 rounds of action played so far.

UZ Sparks and JBC have had identical starts to the latest campaign, as the women’s and men’s log leaders (respectively) are unbeaten.

JBC had a similar start during their debut of the new format last year, ending the season without tasting defeat on their way to the league and Basketball Union of Zimbabwe National League Championship double.

After a disappointing sojourn at Basketball Africa League Qualifiers, the Addison Chiware-led outfit have since returned and picked up from where they left off.

Leopards Academy were their latest victim, as the defending champions eased past them 65-55 at Sunrise Sports Club last weekend.

Second-placed new boys Basket Hounds beat Arcadia Bucs 79-65, while Mbare Bulls picked up only their second win of the season when they thrashed UZ Stars 80-35.

JBC’s latest win took their points tally to 18 points from nine games, while Basket Hounds are in second with 16 points from 10 games.

Arcadia Bucs and Leopards Academy are in third and fourth place with 14 points from nine and 10 games, respectively.

UZ Stars and Mbare Bulls are in the relegation spots, fifth and sixth position, with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

If the women’s division is to play out like it did last season, then there are still a lot of twists and turns to come in the next games.

UZ Sparks beat winless Harare City Hornets 61-24 to take their unbeaten run to 10 games and points tally to 20.

The defending champions Vixens beat Bunnies 62-51 to keep the pressure on log leaders.

They remain in second place with 17 points from 10 matches.

JBC went down 38-20 to newbies Fillies, with the two teams now third and fourth on the log standings with 14 points.

Sparks and Vixens remain title favourites.

JBC, Fillies (14), Bunnies (11) and Harare City Hornets (9) look set to fight it out for the play-off and relegation spots.
