ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere has given fixed telecommunications firm TelOne the nod to cut off non-paying Government departments, which cumulatively owe more than $1,1 billion.
Addressing stakeholders at the TelOne annual general meeting in Harare recently, Minister Muswere said the State-owned enterprise should adopt a stricter approach with debtors to ensure viability.
“Save for a few strategic departments and arms of Government, TelOne should adopt a no-pay, no-service approach,” he said.
“The same institutions that are taking long to settle debts are paying private players and I do not see why they should not pay.”
TelOne has also requested a tariff review, arguing that the cost of importing and distributing 1 Mbps (megabits per second) is US$28, yet the company is distributing at US$10.
