The Harare City Council has reiterated its call for vendors to make use of designated vending sites, instead of conducting their business on sidewalks or hawking in the streets.
The local authority’s spokesperson, Mr Michael Chideme, said the move is not meant to punish vendors, but to instil sanity in the capital, in line with its Vision 2025.
“In light of occasional outbreaks of hygiene-related diseases, it is believed vending fuels such outbreaks because of uncollected waste and absence of proper ablution facilities,” he said.
“Besides being alleged sources of potential disease outbreaks, vending has also been cited as the breeding ground for criminal activities that make a city unattractive to visitors and potential investors.”
Mr Michael Chideme expressed optimism that the exercise will achieve its goal with the help of the community.
“In order to achieve this community has to participate”, he said.
