NEW: Rare heat wave in Rwanda

The Sunday Mail

Rwanda experienced a rare heat wave across the country in the past week, with a record high of 33 degrees Celsius in the capital city, Kigali.

The highest temperatures in the capital, partly blamed on climate change, were “recorded for four consecutive days from March 5 to 8,” the Rwanda Meteorology Agency said in its weather updates on Thursday.

Such high temperatures, though rare in the country, are usually expected in February, the weather service said.

The last highest temperature previously recorded in Kigali was 32,5 degrees on Aug. 17, 2017, it said. The weather agency said the heat wave is a short event and that rains are expected from March 9, followed by cooler temperatures.

On March 2, the weather service predicted torrential rains from March to May and warned of potential disasters in different parts of Rwanda. – Xinhua
