THE Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) says it managed to complete the relocation of 11 network towers across the country, as it continues with efforts to connect underserved communities.

The initiative is meant to improve network coverage and capacity, especially in areas with greater demand for network services or higher population density.

Network operators can relocate towers for several reasons, but mainly for optimisation, improving coverage gaps, enhancing network efficiency, as well as reducing costs associated with maintaining and operating the towers.

In its bid to extend connectivity to underserved rural communities, Potraz funded the relocation of 10 Econet Wireless Zimbabwe towers, while NetOne has relocated one, with another one pending completion.

Econet managed to complete the relocation of towers from Gukwe Mountain to Karimbika USF site in Pfungwe; Iron Duke Mine to Chitungo USF site in Guruve; Maringire to Gezani USF site in Chiredzi; Villi-Villi to the Chikwarakwara USF site in Matabeleland South; Shangani to Nswazi USF site in Bulilima; Chiendambuya to Avilla USF site in Nyanga;  Venice Mine to Muchekawakasungabeta USF site in Sanyati; St Alberts to Nyamuseve USF site in Guruve; Chemakunguwo to Zvipani USF site in Chinhoyi; and Altrina Farm to Fair Adventure USF site in Hwedza.

NetOne has completed the relocation of its tower from Royi to Svuure USF Site in Zaka, while construction is in progress for the relocation of the NetOne Nyamapanda Tower to Makaha USF Site in Mudzi.

Telecel is yet to complete the relocation of its tower in Kariba.

Said Potraz director-general Dr Gift Machengete: “To enhance internet access and use in rural areas, in 2023 we funded the relocation of nine collocated towers around the country to ensure unserved and underserved rural areas receive connectivity and participate fully in the digital economy.

“This brings to eleven the total number of towers relocated to date and this figure is likely to rise to 13 by year-end if Telecel and NetOne complete their outstanding projects, which are underway.”
