A 22-year-old Mukumbura man was slapped with a 14-year jail term by Bindura regional magistrate Mr Amos Mbobo after he was convicted of raping a minor.
Luckmore Chimugwere will, however, serve an effective 12-year jail term after two years were set aside on condition of good behaviour.
Circumstances are that on June 10, 2020, Chimugwere had sexual intercourse with a female juvenile aged 11 once without her consent.
The incident happened along Mukumbura River.
The court heard that the complainant resisted Chimugwere’s advances, but he forcefully ordered the minor to remove her clothes and instructed her to lie down on her back.
It is the State’s case that Chimugwere removed his trousers before raping her once.
“The accused then instructed the complainant to dress up and tied a 50 Meticais (Mozambican currency) note on the complainant’s cloth, ordering her not to reveal the matter to anyone,” read the State’s outline.
“After being freed, the complainant reported to one Cathrine Sorotiya and a search for the accused was conducted, leading to his arrest.”
Passing the sentence, Mr Mbobo said rape cases are worrisome to the community and rapists need to serve a meaningful custodial sentence.
Mr Ngoni Kaseke represented the State.
