MAZOWE Rural District Council’s decision to convert Dandamera Beerhall in Concession, Mashonaland Central, into a polyclinic has paid off, as it has improved health delivery in the area, an official has said.
The new polyclinic has also helped reduce pressure on Concession District Hospital.
Dandamera is the most populous section of Concession, a farming town located about 60km from Harare.
Speaking to The Sunday Mail Online, Mazowe RDC’s district engineer, Engineer Cleopas Mupereki, said residents in the area now have easy access to primary healthcare services.
“In Ward 15, we have Dandamera Polyclinic, which was an old beerhall. We utilised beer levy funds and council funds, and now it is functional,” Eng Mupereki said.
“People from Dandamera and other surrounding areas were heading straight to the district hospital, which is in itself a referral hospital.
“That situation was not ideal, as the normal process is that one has to go to a polyclinic and then get referred to a district hospital.”
MRDC acting CEO Mr Admire Chikonamombe said although the polyclinic is functioning well, more support is required.
“At Dandamera Polyclinic, the project is up and running, but we have a shortage of workers,” he said.
“So, what we have done in the meantime is to get ancillary staff from other centres. Council has agreed to recruit on a temporary basis until we get our full staff complement.”
