KOBUDO champion and Hall of Famer Wilfred Mashaya on Tuesday gave a handful of lucky women free self-defence lessons as a belated Mother’s Day gift.

The lessons, which were part of the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation’s Mother’s Day celebrations, were held at the ministry’s Harare head office and included a brief self-defence tutorial and display.

“When we got the invite to attend the ministry’s Mother’s Day celebration, I jumped at the opportunity,” said Mashaya, who, apart from his martial arts exploits, runs an academy now.

“On top of this being part of the Mother’s Day celebrations, it is also something that is close to my heart.

“These women are pillars of our community but are also vulnerable to things like abuse, muggings and theft.

“I felt important to impart my knowledge to them, and demonstrated a few tips and techniques that could come in handy when faced with such situations,” he said.

Mashaya is currently in talks with the ministry to continue such initiatives.

“Being an ambassador, having been entrusted by the World Kobudo Federation to spread the sport in Zimbabwe, I feel that it is my duty to share my knowledge, skills and experiences with the nation.”
