IT is now difficult for William Manondo to reach 20 goals, but what is almost certain is that the CAPS United striker will walk away with the Golden Boot.

Manondo took his season tally to 16 when Makepekepe drew 2-2 against Bulawayo Chiefs last weekend, and is now four shy of the 20-goal mark going into the last round of the 2021/2022 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

CAPS United clash with Dynamos in a subdued derby at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

However, it is a game that Manondo could use to reinforce his chances for the Premier Soccer League’s end of year awards.

Manondo is almost guaranteed to walk away with US$6 375, which is the prize money for the Golden Boot award.

He is also a favourite for the Soccer Star of the Year award, given his performances for CAPS United, who struggled financially throughout the season.

“I think I had a decent season. I believe I should have done better, but the road was not that smooth.

“At the same time, I am happy for myself,” the 31-year-old striker told The Sunday Mail Online.

His goals were crucial for CAPS United, who at some point faced a serious relegation threat.

Makepekepe have scored 34 goals so far this season, and Manondo has contributed 47 percent of that tally.

However, the former Harare City man would have wanted to breach the 20-goal mark, a target that now seems out of reach.

Manondo has to score four against Dynamos on Sunday to achieve that feat.

Not since 2010, has PSL player scored 20-plus goals.

The last man to do it was Norman Maroto, who banged in 22 for Gunners FC.

“It was a personal target to reach 20 goals. Sometimes we plan, but it is God who decides.

“I give credit to the Almighty, my teammates and coach, Lloyd Chitembwe.”

Chitembwe has been credited for keeping CAPS United going during difficult times.

“As a team, we didn’t do enough, but I am happy we survived relegation. The club is more important than me,” Manondo said.

He is now eyeing the Harare derby.

“It’s not going to be easy against Dynamos, but we will play to win. We will give it our best on Sunday,” said Manondo.

His goals have attracted attention from a number of local and foreign clubs.

There are reports that a South African First Division side is tracking Manondo.
