VETERAN Chimurenga music maestro Dr Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo has announced his intention to call it quits on stage when he holds what could turn out to be his swansong gigs later this year.

This will mark an end to a colorful career spanning more than four decades.

One of Mukanya’s final shows will be held on August 26 in the United Kingdom.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online from his United States base, Dr Mapfumo said this was the right time for him to rest.

“After spending four active years in the music industry, I feel this is now the right time for me to rest. The youngsters will take charge,” he said.

“I have done a lot and I am feeling exhausted from continuing, especially on stage.”

But will Mukanya really quit live performances in August?

The musician has in the past reneged on his word.

He is well-known for “conveniently” changing his stance every now and then.

For instance, he has, in some instances, held endless farewell gigs each time he visits the country.

But with age no longer on his side, he could well be true to his word.

However, time will tell.

At the UK gig, Mukanya will be supported by Mambo Dhuterere and Selmor Mtukudzi.

Selmor said she was happy to share the stage with the veteran musician.

“I am happy to rub shoulders with the living legend on stage. I will certainly take notes from the show and share with my peers,” she said.

Mambo Dhuterere – real name Darlington Mutseta – weighed in.

“It is a great honour to share the stage with the legendary music icon, Thomas Mapfumo. I look forward to the concert,” he said.
