THE Minerva Zimbabwe Chess Open has received a grant from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) after the remarkable growth of the tournament over the past two years.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) is presently preparing to host the latest edition of the Zim Open tournament, which is slated for May 25 to 28 in Harare.

ZCF president Mucha Mkanganwi said: “This year’s edition is special because the FIDE has been so impressed by the consistency and immense growth of the tournament that we have since received a grant to host the tournament.

“This is one of the biggest chess competitions in Southern Africa, and we look forward to hosting some of the best chess minds from a number of countries.”

Minerva Risk Advisors have separately unveiled US$7 000 in prize money for this year’s event.

The Open Section will see the winner of the men’s category walking away with US$1 300, while US$1 000 has been reserved for the ladies.
