Government will regenerate “degrading colonially established” suburbs such as Mbare, Makokoba and Sakubva, and will prioritise workspaces for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the process, President Mnangagwa has said.

He was speaking at the commissioning of Marimba flats along High Glen Road in Harare on Thursday.

“At the same time and in a bid to give dignity to disadvantaged sections of our society, urban regeneration of degrading colonially established suburbs such as Mbare, Makokoba, Sakubva and Mutapa, among others, is being pursued with vigour and tenacity,” he said.

“In these and other areas, provision of small and medium enterprises workspaces is being prioritised. The Second Republic will leave no stone unturned towards restoring order, dignity and access to basic services and social amenities by our people.”

At Marimba flats, two blocks will be allocated to junior medical doctors as part of non-monetary incentives for frontline workers fighting the coronavirus.

The flats are three-bedroomed modern apartments with kitchen, bathroom and wardrobe fittings.

President Mnangagwa also launched the Zimbabwe National Housing Settlement Policy (ZNHSP).

In addition to taking into account the impact of unplanned settlements, the new policy also creates a conducive environment for all stakeholders to participate in human settlement development and address the issue of illegal settlements.

“Numerous new housing projects and others which had stalled are being completed across the country. These projects are being funded by Treasury as well as local and international sector participation.

“My administration is accelerating the provision of houses and social amenities to all sections of society, including the health sector,” he said.
