GOVERNMENT, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), will on Friday launch the strategy for sustainable development of the tilapia value chain in Zimbabwe.

In a joint press statement released on Wednesday, Dr Patrice Talla, FAO sub-regional coordinator for Southern Africa and FAO Representative to Zimbabwe said the strategy is the result of a sector-wide dialogue on upgrading Zimbabwe’s tilapia value chain, which was spearheaded by FISH4ACP, a global fish value chain development initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS).

The programme is being implemented by FAO, with funding from the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

“The launch aims to briefly present the upgrading strategy for the farmed tilapia value chain, confirm the commitment of stakeholders to this strategy and officially launch the implementation phase of the project,” reads the statement.

“The launch of the FISH4ACP tilapia value chain strategy will bring together senior Government of Zimbabwe officials through the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture within the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development; FAO representatives; European Union delegation representatives; Zimbabwe Fish Producers Association representatives; private sector; tilapia value chain actor players and other development partners.”

The event will also celebrate the United Nations International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022), by dedicating special attention to small-scale value chain actors during the morning event and by bringing participants to the field to visit small and medium-scale value chain operations in the afternoon.
