DIAMOND producers should maximise the value derived from the country’s precious stones through cutting, processing, and polishing the minerals before exporting, Mines and Mining Development Minister Zhemu Soda has said.

Addressing members of the African Diamond Producers Association during an Intra Africa Diamond Beneficiation and Value Addition conference held in Victoria Falls on Tuesday, Minister Soda said:

“As diamond producers, we should be at the forefront of adding value to our mineral resources.

“We are dedicated to maximising the value derived from our diamond resources by promoting local beneficiation and value-addition initiatives.”

The Minister said Government recognizes the need of a robust regulatory framework to ensure sustainable development of the sector.

“Zimbabwe has established a 10 percent quota policy for local diamond cutting and polishing companies, which has resulted in job creation and fostered economic diversification,” he said.

He said the country’s Diamond Policy is based on transparency, accountability, sustainable development, beneficiation, value addition, community participation and adherence to international best practices.

“Zimbabwe remains committed to adhering to the best practices in the diamond sector and is open to learning and adapting to the requirements of this dynamic industry,” he said.
