GOVERNMENT and media houses have been implored to consider the welfare of journalists by providing housing and vehicles schemes, as they play a pivotal role in reporting the country’s development trajectory.

Speaking at an event organised by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce for media and business in Harare, the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) president Mr Denford Mutashu said self-empowerment schemes should be considered for journalists.

“As an association, we also believe that at the time that the civil servants get vehicles and housing schemes, surely journalists should be considered for such schemes.

“We surely need to recognise the role that the media plays in day-to-day life, entertainment, education and, of course, information,” Mr Mutashu said.

“Sometimes we may underestimate that role, but that role has been quite significant and has been offered to us as a citizenry under very difficult conditions.”

He said journalists across the country play a significant role in the development of the country.
