THE Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has warned farmers and traders against the illegal trading of maize, soya beans, wheat and barley, which are regarded as controlled products.

In a statement on Thursday, the GMB said anyone who is in the business of dealing in controlled products is required to abide by the stipulated regulations under Statutory Instrument (SI) 145 of 2019, as well as SIs 97 of 2021 and 188 of 2021.

“All farmers or producers of controlled products are required to deliver the product to any nearest GMB depot within 14 days of harvesting.

“Farmers or producers who intend to retain a portion of the product shall apply for exemption from GMB,” the statement said.

Farmers are also required to apply for a movement permit when grain is being transported from one area to the other.

GMB will be enforcing the law to ensure compliance.

Anyone found in breach of the law faces prosecution, forfeiture of the grain and a fine that is three times the selling price of the controlled product.
