MBARE’S George Hartley Public Swimming Pool, which has been lying idle for over three years, was recently refurbished to the tune of US$52 000 by the Chamber of Chinese Enterprises Zimbabwe (CCEZ).
It was handed over to the Harare City Council on Wednesday.
The recreational facility had been dilapidated through wear and tear, vandalism and neglect.
CCEZ vice-chairperson, Mrs Shanel Liu said the Chamber was proud to have contributed to the welfare of the Mbare community by refurbishing the swimming pool.
She said their organisation is committed to promoting mutual relations and strengthening business ties between China and Zimbabwe.
“This commitment has seen us take up this life-changing project to spruce up Mbare Swimming pool for US$52 000.
“The Chamber fully understands that the swimming pool serves as a community hub for sports, recreation and leisure hence we did not hesitate to help renovate it,” she said.
The facility will help more than 50 educational institutions from ECD, primary and secondary schools in and around Mbare to train children to swim.
“The importance of this swimming pool should never be underestimated, as it is not only about recreation, but is also a facility that will keep the youths positively engaged off the streets.”
